This morning, however, that thought led me down a rabbit hole to find out which strange or unusual pets are legal in the state of Michigan. Here`s what I found. A Michigan family has won a battle with the state government to keep a deer they`ve been raising since it was a fawn. As a cat owner, I never wondered if it would be legal to take my pet everywhere. Owning a cat or dog, even a bird, is not considered strange or unusual, so why should I question it? The Department of Natural Resources announced today that it has reached an agreement with the Genesee County family, who have been illegally raising deer for about five years. Due to the exceptional circumstances of this situation, the agreement requires that the home be registered as a private deer (deer/moose) facility so that deer can remain indoors. As the operator of the facility, the family must comply with the requirements of the Private Cervid Marketing Act (POC) (Act 190 of 2000). I know I`ve heard stories of people keeping raccoons at home, people having ducks and even baby deer (remember Audrey Hepburn?). According to Florida`s administrative code, Class I animals are illegal to possess and Class II animals require a permit. Class I animals include bears, big cats, rhinos, crocodiles, chimpanzees and more. Class II includes howler monkeys, macaques, bobcats, pumas, cheetahs, alligators, wolves, giraffes and more. A 2010 law prohibits the import, sale and release of non-native species. This law further restricts the capture and keeping of venomous reptiles and other reptiles of concern, unless the owner already had a permit before the law. You do not need a permit to keep ferrets, parrots, hedgehogs, chinchillas and other small rodents. Since Michigan law states that only licensed rehabilitators can legally own wild animals, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources wanted to remove Lilly from its owners, which sparked a wave of outrage on the Internet.
A petition change.org collected 16,004 signatures and an Indiegogo petition launched to help the family through legal means raised nearly $2,500. According to the Indiegogo petition, a Facebook group was also created that garnered 10,000 supporters before being deleted. After a brief legal battle, an agreement was negotiated between the DNR and Lily`s owners to let the deer stay with the family. While Washington and its clients are delighted with the outcome, the agreement contains several conditions. Essentially, the Genesee County home must be registered as a private wildlife facility with strict guidelines for deer health and welfare. The family must also admit that it was illegal to keep the deer as a pet. We are very grateful to everyone who helped support Lilly. As you can imagine, the last few weeks have been an emotional roller coaster for us, and now that the agreement has been signed, we want to get back to the normal routine of our lives. You don`t need a permit to own monkeys, reptiles, amphibians, parrots, tropical fish, rabbits or small rodents like gerbils, hamsters, guinea pigs and mice. The Arizona administrative code states that it is illegal to possess non-domestic dogs and cats, primates (except non-infant primates which are free of zoonoses), alligators, crocodiles, poisonous snakes, and many others. Special permits may be issued to specific individuals or groups to keep these animals if the application falls under the categories of education, public health, commercial photography, wildlife rehabilitation or wildlife management. The possession of wolf-dog hybrids, lions, tigers, cougars, cheetahs, leopards, jaguars, panthers and bears is illegal in the state of Michigan.
