Founded in 1886, it is the oldest legal aid provider in Illinois and the second oldest in the country. LAS`s mission is to protect and empower families by ensuring equal access to justice for all by focusing on the most vulnerable communities, including the poor, the elderly, and victims of violence and crime. Karen Callahan visited Ruth at Alcelia`s house and saw her happy, comfortable and safe. Although Karen recommended guardianship, Alcelia had a criminal past and the court had to appoint Alcelia as guardian. Jia (Julia) joined CVLS` AILA Legal Clinic after five unsuccessful attempts and 20 years of trying to obtain a green card. Because Julia needed evidence of a 20-year-old crime, her lawyer went to courthouses looking for archived documents. She discovered that a police officer`s first statement led to the initial rejection of Julia`s visa. They convinced the police service to provide a corrected explanation of the immigration appeal. Success! Julia`s nonimmigrant visa will allow Julia to obtain a green card in three years and U.S. citizenship a few years later. After being documented, Julia thanked her lawyer and said, “My heart was moved and touched. My life became easy. Renae Yoo, a volunteer at the CVLS, made this possible and proved that her client was qualified for a green card.
